Welcome to A11y Lab

A11y Lab is a research group in the Department of Human-Centered Computing and Social Informatics at the College of Information Science and Technology (IST), Pennsylvania State University.

Our research lies at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Accessible Computing, Systems, and Human-Centered AI. We build computing systems that serve people whom the mainstream often overlooks, especially individuals who are blind or have low vision (BLV), motor disabilities, or complex sensory needs. Our broader goal is to ensure that the benefit of computing is experientially equitable for all users.

Research Projects

Our projects are interdisciplinary by nature. We organize this work into twelve connected themes: Understanding User Needs; Interaction Models and Input Techniques; Professionals Tools; Low-Vision Tools; AI for Accessibility; Human-AI Teaming; Robot-Mediated Assistance; Accessibility APIs and Assistive Systems; Information Representation; Alternative Communication for Individuals with Speech or Motor Impairments; AR/VR/MidAir Interaction; and Independent Living.
